P. 13
Water Quality System Maintenance - Inspection, cleaning and repair of specialized drainage systems
constructed for water quality purposes. Ensures compliance with environmental regulations.
Under Guardrail Cleaning - Eliminating roadway debris deposits and vegetated growth directly under
these protective devices to allow unobstructed run-off of storm water from road surfaces.
Traffic Maintenance
Striping - Replaces worn-out painted yellow and white long-line traffic stripes on roads throughout the
county. Typically accomplished May through September.
Thermoplastic Stencils - Repairs or replaces crosswalks, stop bars, turn arrows, bike lane symbols and
other traffic markings made of thermoplastic.
Railroad Stencils - Repairs or replaces railroad crossing markings to ensure visibility for road users.
School Stencils - Repairs or replaces school crossing markings to ensure visibility for road users.
Raised Pavement Marker Maintenance - The removal and replacement of defective raised pavement
markers to enhance nighttime visibility of roadways.
Traffic Signal Maintenance - The preventative and responsive activities to preserve traffic signal
infrastructure and control devices necessary for the safe and efficient utilization of roadways.
Vegetation Maintenance
Brush Cut - Manages vegetation in the road right-of-way by clearing sight distance at intersections and
curves, removing vegetative obstructions, and maintaining access to bridges and other assets in
compliance with the Integrated Vegetation Management Program. Completed year round.
Chipping - Cuts, chips and removes heavy vegetation (trees, tree branches, large brush) that creates
safety issues, or that makes other types of road maintenance difficult. Completed by request.
Shoulder Mowing - Cuts grasses and other vegetation on the road shoulder to eliminate sight-distance
problems and to improve the flow of drainage water off the road. Helpful as a predecessor to other
shoulder maintenance work.
Plant Establishment - Protects and monitors native plants that are placed as erosion control and natural
habitat enhancements on road-related projects such as bridge and culvert replacements. May entail the
removal of invasive plant species.
Riparian Management Area Maintenance - Consists of ensuring the RMA functions as a passive water
quality treatment system. Protective measures implemented if within 250 feet of a designated stream.
Work may include drainage, surface, bridge, vegetation, and traffic related activities that facilitate sheet
flow from the roadway to the shoulder or ditch line prior to flow entering the regulated waterway or
storm water system. Typical tasks include removal of vegetated or aggregate berms, cleaning under
