P. 12
Gravel Road Maintenance - Grading the existing surface and placing additional crushed rock where
needed to improve smoothness and allow water to flow off the road. Accomplished when there is
enough moisture in the road base, usually winter, spring, and fall.
Sweeping - Removes debris from the roadway and especially from bike lanes in order to provide a safe
traveling surface. It also reduces the amount of leaves, gravel, and trash from entering the storm water
systems and polluting our streams.
Shoulder Maintenance - For paved roads, adding crushed rock to the road shoulder and shaping it to
prevent vehicles from losing control if they wander off the pavement. Also helps allow water to flow
away from the road and into ditches.
Asphalt Apron Maintenance - Reparation of asphalt "aprons" at hard surface to gravel road
intersections. Hot mix asphaltic concrete is machine placed and compacted in areas requiring repair.
Bridge Maintenance
Bridge Maintenance - Bridge maintenance needs are determined based upon a two-year inspection cycle.
Maintenance activities include repair or replacement of structural bridge members such as abutments,
piles, pile caps, stringers, decking and non-structural members. Also, a variety of preventive activities
including removing debris from around pilings, sealing deck joints, bridge cleaning and painting certain
fittings.
Drainage Maintenance
Ditch Maintenance - Removal of sedimentation and debris from drainage ditches to protect the road by
improving drainage flow. Also includes environmental measures to reduce erosion and improve water
quality through filtration by native plant species.
Culvert Replacement - Replacement of worn out or under-sized culverts that carry water under the road.
A failed culvert can result in the road washing out or the creation of a sink hole. Fish passage and other
environmental criteria are often required, as are permits from the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife.
Erosion Repair - Repair to areas of ditch line, shoulders or back slopes caused by erosion. Performed to
prevent slides, wash-outs and damage to the roadway, adjacent property and the environment.
Shoulder Pulling - Reestablishes the movement of water off the roadway by removing the build-up of soil
and plant material along the edges of pavement that block water from getting to the ditch.
Tile Flushing - Cleans the drainage pipes that are present under most driveways and at intersections on
roads with ditches.
Catch Basin Cleaning - Cleans drainage catch basins to provide for the collection and free flow of water
through piped (versus ditched) systems thereby preventing localized flooding.
