Asset Types

Bridge - A structure that typically consists of vertical supports and horizontal members connecting at
least two road segments that allows safe and efficient passage of a vehicle or pedestrian over an
obstacle such as a body of water, a road, or a railway. In some instances, large culverts are considered
           bridges.

Culvert - A structure underneath the roadway used to pass storm water through a roadway fill section.

Gravel Road - A road that has crushed aggregate material as the driving surface.

Landscaped Area - A region in the right-of-way with ornamental trees, shrubs, ground cover intended to
provide erosion control, environmental mitigation, traffic calming, and aesthetic value to the extent that
it can be managed and maintained to the Board-adopted level of service.

Pavement - The hard driving surface of a road that carries the vehicular traffic. The surface can be made
of bituminous material (asphalt or chip seal) or Portland cement concrete.

Roadside Ditch - An open channel adjacent to the roadway used for the collection and conveyance of
           storm-water runoff.

Water Quality Structure - A facility and/or feature designed and constructed to minimize water pollution
to local streams and rivers created by roadway storm-water runoff.

Guardrail - A fence or rail system at the side of a road intended to reduce the risk of serious accidents

           Activity Descriptions

           Surface Maintenance

Thin Lift Asphalt Overlay - A cost effective preventative maintenance treatment consisting of hot mix
asphalt concrete (HMAC) machine placed and compacted at a thickness of less than 1 ½ inches.

Asphalt Paving - Medium cost corrective maintenance treatment for deteriorated paved surfaces. Hot
mix asphalt concrete (HMAC) is machine placed and compacted to provide a repair usually lasting five to
           ten years.

Pavement Repair - Repair to localized areas of pavement that are severely deteriorated. This method
entails removing and replacing the failed pavement and, if necessary, the underlying base material. This
is a relatively expensive repair technique.

Crack Seal - Low cost preventive maintenance treatment to repair localized cracking on paved road
surfaces. Prevents water from entering and damaging the road base thus extending the life of the road
three to five years. It is often used in conjunction with other surface seal methods to attain even longer
pavement life. May be applied year round if the pavement is dry.
